Let's Check in By Age 7
We get it. As a parent, you want to know you're doing the right thing for your child! While it’s never too late to start orthodontics, did you know that getting an early evaluation for your child might make their smile journey easier later on?
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that kids have an initial orthodontic screening by age 7.
Why an Early Check-in is So Important
- It’s Just a Look: Early evaluation isn't necessarily followed by early treatment. In most cases, we simply monitor your child's natural growth patterns. This helps us get the best results in the most efficient way and prevent future problems.
- We Understand Growth: By age six or seven, your child's first adult molars are usually starting to emerge. This allows us to see the basic alignment and determine if there will be enough room for all their permanent teeth.
- Easy Treatment: Some conditions are much easier to treat when a child's natural growth is still going full speed ahead.
Treatment usually starts around ages 9-14, after the baby teeth are gone. But if we catch certain issues early, we can often simplify the entire process!
Common Issues That Benefit From Early Help:
- Severe Crossbite: This is when the upper teeth close inside the lower teeth. We can often use a gentle palatal expander to correct this while the jaw is still developing, which can help prevent the need for more complex treatment like surgery down the road.
- Teeth Crowding: If the jaws are too small for all the permanent teeth, early action like palatal expansion can help those adult teeth erupt properly. Even if braces are needed later, the treatment time will likely be shorter and less complicated.
- Protruding Front Teeth: Teeth that stick out can be prone to chipping or fractures. Early treatment can reduce the risk of injury and also help a child feel comfortable and confident about their smile sooner.
Early Orthodontic Treatment Reviews
My daughter loves to come to this office in Columbus. Everybody is friendly and welcoming, such sweet ladies! The entire staff is so considerate. Yesterday she got her braces which she was very excited about. She said that the lady that worked on her was so nice and let her have frequent spit and swish brakes because the glue for the braces didn't taste good. The aftercare was explained thoroughly and my daughter can't wait to go back to change out the rubber bands for a new color. The waiting room is very cozy and there is a coffee station. I brought a book to read because I knew it's gonna take a while. The highlight for my daughter is getting Edney bucks, which the kids get for being on time for the appointment, wearing the Edney shirt, having a great report card, going to yearly dentist checkups, etc.I highly recommend Edney Orthodontics.
Edney Orthodontics is the best of the best. Their customer service is incomparable, and they are pros in all areas of treatment. Absolutely love coming to the office - always so warm and welcoming!
Today is the day we got our daughter’s braces OFF! 🎉 We waited almost 3 years for this day! From the very beginning of this journey, Dr. Edney has been incredibly welcoming and informative, guiding us through every single step along the way. The entire staff has always been kind, knowledgeable, and made us feel comfortable and at ease from the moment we walked in the door. We are so grateful for the amazing care and would highly recommend Edney Orthodontics to anyone starting their own braces journey!
Simply put, Dr. Edney and his staff is the best. Our eldest daughter received orthodontic treatment from him, and her smile is gorgeous. Now that it's time for our youngest daughter to have braces, there was no debate. Dr. Edney is the best!

We’re here for you to help gently correct these habits! Since the sooner we address them the better, this is one more great reason to schedule that simple early screening.
